Abstract

At present for a reliable determination of the bursting speed of vitrified bonded grinding wheels, spin burst tests have to be carried out. The existing methods to calculate bursting speeds are based on experimentally determined bending strengths, which provide inaccurate results because the calculated bursting speeds deviate up to 20 % from the experimentally observed speeds. In the project "Numerische und experimentelle Analyse des Bruchverhaltens von keramisch gebundenen Schleifscheiben" (Numerical and experimental analysis of the breaking behaviour of vitrified bonded grinding wheels) which was supported by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen e.V. (German Federation of Industrial Cooperative Research Associations "Otto von Guericke"), a concept based on fracture mechanics was developed to calculate the bursting speeds of straight as well as of one-sided recessed vitrified bonded grinding wheels.
