General Biomedical Engineering

The field of biomedical engineering comprises four main research areas. The first is in the modelling bone density changes under characteristic loads by means of numerical simulation. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of already used or potential bone implants are characterised by means of experimental tests (bone investigation). Another focus includes the use of multi-body simulations. Here, a part of the human or animal skeleton is numerically mapped together with the respective muscles in order to determine resulting loads for characteristic movements. The last focus deals with numerical implant analysis. Here, results from the other focal points can be used to consider occurring loads as well as the interaction with the bone realistically. The implant analysis extends to the consideration of the manufacturing processes used as well as the analysis under conditions of use.
