Lightweight construction concepts

The area of lightweight construction concepts includes various approaches that deal with alternative materials as well as innovative hybrid concepts. The emphasis on fibre-reinforced plastics includes, for example, organic sheets, unidirectionally reinforced laminates and glass mat-reinforced thermoplastics. Due to the complex material behaviour, new characterisation methods are applied, with the focus on thermomechanical material characterisation as well as development and parameterisation of material models. In addition, research is being carried out on so-called hybrid components. Here, the bonding of different metallic materials such as steel and aluminium as well as metallic and non-metallic materials is investigated. The aim is to find the ideal combination of the different material properties for the production of high-performance components adapted to specific requirements. Other materials that are becoming increasingly important in lightweight construction are aluminium and magnesium. These materials are also being analysed and characterised as a part of various projects. Another area is dedicated to powder forging. Here, not only the process itself but also the resulting component is examined.
